Auxiliary Police

Auxiliary police officers are important for the overall operation of the regular police force. These volunteer officers are recruited, processed, trained, assigned duties, and are regulated pursuant to the policies, rules, regulations, and the general orders of the Police Department. City Code authorizes the Auxiliary Police as an entity of the Police Department.

All auxiliary officers are sworn officers certified by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services. Auxiliary officers provide a wide range of assistance to the Department, including criminal patrol, traffic control, event security, crime-scene investigation, special operations support and administrative support.

You must possess a valid VA DCJS Law Enforcement Officer Certification and successfully complete a hiring process to become an Auxiliary Police Officer with the Fredericksburg Police Department. The certification requirement is necessary because, unfortunately, the academy no longer hosts part-time academy classes that in years past had accommodated persons interested in achieving their LE certification, but held full time employment elsewhere. If you do not have a valid VA DCJS Law Enforcement Officer Certification, and you can commit to 19 weeks of full-time academy attendance, you can begin a hiring process at any time when we are hosting written exam testing dates. If hired, our agency will sponsor you while you attend the full-time academy for 19 weeks (pay for you to attend).

If you are hired as an Auxiliary Police Officer, you will be required to attend orientation here at our Police Department. The orientation will require approximately five weeks of your attendance full-time Monday- Friday from 8:00AM to 4:00PM unless otherwise noted on the schedule.

At the completion of orientation, the Field Training Evaluation Program (FTEP) will begin. FTEP must be completed within 12 months of your appointment date.

Auxiliary Officers are provided the same equipment and training as regular Police Officers, and are required to contribute a minimum of 20 on-duty hours per month.

If you have any questions, please contact the recruiter: Sergeant Crystal Hill , or 540-372- 4262.
