City Addressing Policy and Address Changes

The City has adopted a formal addressing policy that outlines procedures for assigning new addresses. The policy also details processes for changing existing addresses to ensure they are in compliance with policy standards. These standards are derived from National Emergency Number Association (NENA) standards and from standards that will be necessary for future NextGeneration911 implementation.

To ensure all City addresses adhere to the new standards, some existing addresses will be changed to update street names, address numbers, or both. This process is necessary to ensure the City maintains orderly addresses, which is important for emergency response services, mail delivery, recordkeeping, and other government functions. Cooperation from the community is important to the process, and the City of Fredericksburg will work very closely with affected property owners to ensure address changes are as smooth as possible.

Affected property owners can expect to receive a letter in the mail from the City outlining the reason for the address change, the new address, date of change, and other information to help the transition process. Any address change notice will also include contact information for a City employee able to answer questions and explain the process. If you receive a letter indicating that your address will be changing, please utilize the contact information for any of your questions and concerns.
