Fredericksburg Regional Transit (FRED), has been awarded a grant from the Virginia Transit Association (VTA) in the amount of $346,000. FRED, in partnership with local Departments of Social Services, will use these funds for its Transit Supporting Working Families program. This program will provide transit passes to eligible individuals and families to assist them in their need to gain or maintain employment and to receive educational and training resources in order to successfully gain employment.
“Transit acts as a catalyst for opportunity. The ability to provide transit passes to participants significantly reduces a barrier to employment and provides the ability for those in the program to fulfill basic household needs without having to bear the burden of a transit fare,” says Jamie Jackson, FRED’s Director of Public Transit. FRED, in partnership with the City of Fredericksburg, Stafford County, Spotsylvania County Departments of Social Services and other community partners will work with eligible participants for the Transit Supporting Working Families Program (TSWF) in order to provide free FRED transit passes for work, education, and trade school trips to program participants.
The purpose of the project is to advance the goals of the Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) program through transit service. Participants can also be eligible based on income (those who earn up to 200% of the poverty level who have a dependent child and receive SNAP or Medicaid), receive SNAP benefits, or receive Medicaid. FRED will offer transit passes that assist participants/transit riders in their trip-making options, reducing the impact on limited financial resources, mitigating at least one barrier to employment, and providing reliable transportation. This program will provide TANF participants with the ability to have no-cost, reliable transit service, which FRED Transit offers. Participants will be provided transit support in order to enter the workforce, retain their position and have access to education to allow for career advancement.
The Program will begin in October 2020 and run through June 2021. For more information please contact FRED Transit or your local department of Social Services in the City of Fredericksburg, Stafford, or Spotsylvania County.
