Qualifications & Requirements
Candidates for office must meet certain qualifications and are required to file documents in order to qualify to appear on the ballot. These qualifications and requirements may vary depending on whether the office is local, statewide, federal, or a general assembly seat. It is the responsibility of prospective candidates to determine these requirements and their eligibility. Generally, all candidates must meet the following minimum qualifications:
- Be a resident of the Commonwealth of Virginia for one year immediately preceding the election
- Be qualified to vote for and hold the office sought

Please visit the Virginia Department of Elections for all required forms, deadlines, and information which is available for review, download, and submission. This site provides the information, forms, and calendar for: becoming a candidate, campaign finance, and political committees.
You may download the information or contact the Department of Elections to request a bulletin and forms be mailed to you for a fee of $10. Please send your request and check payable to the Department of Elections to:

The Voter Registrar's Office is not able to advise candidates. Campaign and Candidate compliance with campaign filing laws in the Commonwealth of Virginia are the responsibility of candidates and campaigns.
