The City of Fredericksburg Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) team was formed in 2016. All of the Department pilots are part 107 Federal Aviation Administration certified and are required to recertify every two years. Team members go through an intensive selection process to become a member of the team. The sUAS team responds and assists with accident investigations, crime scene investigations, missing persons, special events, and tactical operations. The team is also called upon from other Departments within the City to assist them as needed.
The sUAS pilots train monthly with several different types of scenarios and challenges, to include a proficiency course. The team also trains with the Special Equipment Tactical Team, Tactical Field Force Team, and Project Lifesaver team, and participates in Incident Command System training. The Fredericksburg sUAS team also assists and trains with other jurisdictions in the region.
