Taxi Permits

Any taxi cab company operating within the City of Fredericksburg must obtain a taxi cab permit which is regulated by City Code 58-392. Taxi cabs are subject to an inspection every December in order to have their permit renewed.

If you would like to register your taxi cab company with the City of Fredericksburg, are adding a new vehicle to your fleet, or a new driver, the following steps are required in order to obtain a taxi cab permit.

Step 1: Submit Application to Police Department Records Office

Taxi Cab Permit applications can be submitted in person to the Records Office located at Police Headquarters.

If your application is approved, you will be notified by the Police Department and asked to come back to Police Headquarters to receive a copy of the approval letter. The approval letter is required in order to pay the fee at the Treasure's Office.

If your application has been denied, you will be contacted by the Community Services Sergeant and advised of the denial reason.

Step 2: Pay Taxi Permit Fee

Taxi Cab Permit fees must be made in person at the Treasurer's Office, which is located in City Hall at 715 Princess Anne Street.

New permits are $50 fee and renewal permits are $25.

Payments of fees can be made Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

The Treasurer accepts cash, money order, and credit or debit for taxi cab permits. Payment made by credit or debit will be subject to a convenience fee set by the Treasurer’s Office. Checks will not be accepted.

Once your application is approved, you will have 30 days to pick up your permit. If your permit is not picked up within the 30 days, you will have to re-apply.

Step 3: Obtain Taxi Cab ID at Police Headquarters

Once your required fees have been paid, you will need to return to Police Headquarters to have your photo taken and ID card issued. Photos can be taken Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and  3:00 p.m..

Step 4: Submit Fingerprints at Sheriff's Office

Fingerprints must be on file before your taxi permit application will be considered. Fingerprints are only required for new applications. Fingerprinting services are offered on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

No fees are assessed directly to the applicant for fingerprinting services.

Step 5: Taxi Cab Inspection

Once the first four steps are completed, you may bring your vehicle and your application to Police Headquarters to have it inspected to ensure it meets the safety standards outlined in City Code sections 58-384 and 58-385.
