Becoming an Officer of Election

Officers of Election are appointed each year by the Fredericksburg City Electoral Board to work at the polls on Election Day. More than 40 officers are required for a General Election; and a Chief Officer of Election is in charge at each polling place and is responsible for its management.

If you are registered to vote in the City of Fredericksburg, are free on Election Day, want to support the democratic process, see all your neighbors, and earn $115, you might consider becoming an Officer of Election.

As an Officer of Election, you will be eligible to vote by absentee ballot; you will receive training prior to the election; you will be assigned to your own polling place or to another within the City; you will be required to report to your assigned polling place at 5:00 a.m.; you will be required to stay at your assigned polling place from 5:00 a.m. until the polls close at 7:00 p.m. and the paperwork is completed; and your election duties may include the following:

  • setting up equipment
  • demonstrating how to mark the ballot
  • checking voters in and marking the voters' list and poll book
  • issuing ballots
  • providing voter assistance and instructions
  • insuring a fair and impartial election is held
  • certifying the election results
  • disassembling and storing the equipment

Send e-mail to the Voter Registrar/General Registrar or call (540) 372-1030 for additional information or to receive an "Application to Serve as Officer of Election."
