General Information on Elections

General elections are held every November on the Tuesday after the first Monday. Primary elections are generally held in June. Instead of a primary, with statutory provisions, political parties may choose their candidate via other methods as determined by the party, i.e., convention, mass meeting or caucus.

City Elections for Mayor, council members and school board members are held in May on even numbered years and on a staggered basis. Constitutional officers serve four years. The exception to this is the Clerk of the Court who serves eight years. House of Delegate members are elected for two years in odd numbered years. Virginia Senate members serve four years.

It is the policy of the Office of the Registrar of Voters that no information is given on candidates. This includes an indication about who are the incumbents. To do so could be construed as a conflict with the nonpartisan manner in which the officer operates.
