Household Hazardous Waste Collection Days
The Public Works Department and the Rappahannock Regional Solid Waste Management Board (R-Board) conduct four Household Hazardous Waste Collection Days each year at sites in the City of Fredericksburg and Stafford County. Residents from both localities can bring household hazardous wastes to the sites for safe disposal. These special collection days usually take place during April and October. Residents must display a current City of Fredericksburg or Stafford County vehicle decal in order to drop off their hazardous materials.
The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) considers a hazardous substance to be one which is chemically reactive when mixed with other substances, corrosive, explosive, flammable, or toxic. Many items found in basements, bathrooms, garages, and kitchens are classified as hazardous materials. Below is a list of waste materials that will be accepted at the Household Hazardous Waste Collection sites. Also included are the areas in and around the home in which they can be found.
Garage: automatic transmission fluid, batteries, battery acid, brake fluid, car wax with solvent, diesel fuel, fuel oil, gasoline, kerosene, metal polish with solvent, and various other petroleum products. The Regional Landfill and Recycling Center accepts antifreeze, car batteries, and oil year-round.
Garden: fertilizer, fungicide, herbicide, insecticide, rat poison, and weed-killer.
Kitchen: bug spray, floor care products, furniture polish, and metal polish with solvent.
Medical or radioactive waste will not be accepted.
Miscellaneous: art media, art paint, computer equipment, dry-cleaning solvent, fiberglass epoxy, fluorescent lights, gun-cleaning solvent, lighter fluid, lithium batteries, mercury batteries, mothballs, photographic chemicals (unmixed), and swimming pool acid.
Workshop: cutting oil, glue (solvent-based), paint (auto), paint (model), paint (oil-based), paint stripper, paint thinner, paintbrush cleaner with solvent, primer, turpentine, varnish, and wood preservative.
Individuals are asked to stay in their vehicles while professional handlers dispose of the hazardous materials. In order to drop off your hazardous waste, citizens must provide proof of residency in either the City of Fredericksburg or Stafford County. Surveys are conducted to determine the kind and amount of materials being disposed.
