CHINS/1st Offender Probation Officer/Program Assistant (Full-time)
Court Services

Under administrative direction, performs professional and administrative work in managing the Child In Need of Supervision (CHINS) and First Offenders programs. Duties include providing probationary supervision, counseling and direct services to juvenile first offenders. Plans program services to meet client needs and the requirements of the courts, and the Department of Juvenile Justice. Develops service plans; provides services directly and through referrals emergency assistance, crisis intervention, etc. Prepares and maintains records and files; prepares a variety of reports, statistical information and summaries regarding program activities; and coordinates services, administrative functions and other program activities with other agencies, human service organizations, courts, etc. Performs related work as required. Successful candidate will have bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, psychology, social work or a related field preferred. Additionally, the position requires 1 to 2 years of experience providing counseling or other direct services to persons involved in legal proceedings; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skill, knowledge and ability. Position also requires a valid Virginia driver’s license with an acceptable driving record. Starting Salary Range: $37,000 - $39,000 While the position is technically open until filled, for administrative purposes, completed City Applications and resumes should be submitted before the close of business on Friday, May 23, 2008.

Communications Officer/Elibility List (Part-time)
Police Department

Under general supervision, this part time position receives incoming phone calls to the Police Department and City Emergency communications system; for emergency calls, dispatches the appropriate agency to respond to the need for assistance; and performs a variety of administrative support functions for communications system and department. Work significantly impacts the safety of the general public and the responding agency personnel. Performs related work as required. Successful applicant will have the educational equivalent of graduation from high school; supplemented by 3 – 6 months of experience and/or training involving emergency response dispatching, answering telephones and/or data entry; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Additionally, there are special requirements of certifications in VCIN/NCIC Certificate and Dispatcher school, CPR and First, and in Emergency Medical Dispatch. This position will involve shift work, weekends and holidays so a flexible schedule is essential. Starting Hourly Rate: $15.17 While the position is open until filled, completed City Applications and resumes should be submitted before the close of business on May 16, 2008. Firefighter/EMT (Full-time)
Fire Department

Successful applicants for Firefighter/EMT vacancy will be at least 18 years of age and have a high school diploma or GED. Successful applicant for this vacancy requires the possession of the certification of Virginia Department of Fire Programs, Firefighter II or proboard equivalent; EMT-Basic; Current CPR Certification, Emergency Vehicle Operation III; Hazardous Materials Awareness. Firefighter/Medic I (Full-time)
Fire Department

Successful applicant for Firefighter/Medic 1 vacancy will be at least 18 years of age and will have a high school diploma or GED. Successful applicant for the vacancy requires the possession of certification as EMT-Intermediate released by Operational Medical Director; current driver’s license and current certifications in CPR, Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Pediatric Advanced Life Support. Possession of Certification of Virginia Department of Fire Programs, Firefighter II or proboard equivalent; Emergency Vehicle Operation III; Hazardous Materials Awareness. Volunteers
Police Department

The Police Department is looking for volunteers to assist with a front desk assignment. Primary responsibility is to greet visitors in the main lobby of Police Headquarters and direct them to appropriate personnel in the building for further assistance. Other duties may include data entry, assisting citizens with obtaining City residential parking permits, and completion of other police department forms. The hours will need to be flexible, but will cover Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.
