Downtown & City Parking Information
On-Street Parking
In general, parking non-commercial vehicles on City streets is unrestricted unless otherwise prohibited by signs. However, a legally parked vehicle or trailer cannot be left in the same specific location for more than ten days without being moved.

Princess Anne Building Parking Lot
The free lot behind 904 Princess Anne Street, accessible from Princess Anne and Charles Streets, is available from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday through Friday and around the clock on weekends.  

1016 Charles St. (Corner of Charles and Amelia Streets)
29 free parking spaces are available to the public around the clock weekdays and weekends. An additional 17 parking spaces are available to the public Monday-Friday from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. and around the clock on the weekends. Entrances are on Charles and Amelia Streets, and exits are on Prince Edward and Amelia streets.

410 William St. (Virginia Partners Bank)
This 18-space free lot behind Virginia Partners Bank is available to the public Monday-Friday from 6 p.m. to 8 a.m., after 12 p.m. on Saturday, and all day on Sunday.

Free City Parking Lots

  • 400 block Sophia Street, just south of RR tracks, restricted to city residents between 5AM and 6PM      
  • Intersection of Sophia Street and Charlotte Street - 2 hour parking spaces Monday - Saturday between 9AM and 5PM
  • 700 block Sophia Street - between Charlotte Street and Hanover Street, restricted to city residents Monday - Friday between 5AM - 8AM
  • 800 - 900 blocks Sophia Street - at the end of George Street, restricted to city residents Monday - Friday between 5AM - 8AM
  • 1000 block Sophia Street 

Parking Garage
The Sophia Street Parking Garage located at the corner of Sophia and Wolfe Street, provides 297 parking spaces in historic downtown Fredericksburg. It is within easy walking distance of key downtown points such as the train station, visitor’s center, and courts.

Resident Only On-Street Parking 
Some streets are designated as “Resident Parking Only”. Vehicles owners who reside in resident only parking areas may obtain a resident parking permit at Police Headquarters during normal business hours. Applicants are required to show the vehicle registration and proof of address. Residents may also obtain temporary parking permits for guests. 

Resident Only VRE Parking 
The train station parking lot between Sophia and Caroline is reserved for City residents. Resident stickers may be obtained from the City Treasurer’s Office

UMW Student On-Street Parking 
There are parking restrictions for UMW students and staff on the residential streets adjoining the University of Mary Washington. UMW students and staff may obtain the appropriate permits from the University. 

Illegally Parked Vehicles

Illegally parked vehicles that present a hazard or impede traffic are subject to immediate towing. Illegally parked vehicles that do not present a hazard or impede the flow of traffic are subject to being towed after 4 days.

Parking Enforcement
In July 2007, the Fredericksburg Police Department implemented technology called autoChalk to encourage residents and visitors to obey the time-zone parking restrictions in the downtown district.
