Voter Registration
It is your responsibility to complete the application fully and accurately. Please review your application before submission.

Online Application

Register to Vote through the Virginia Department of Elections.

You may may check your registration 
status and update your registration through the Virginia Department of Elections.

Deadline: The deadline to register, or update your registration information, is 22 days before a General or Primary election. You may disqualify yourself from voting if you move within Virginia and do not notify the Registrar of your new address.

In-person Application

You may apply in person at the Voter Registrar 8:30am-4:00pm, Monday through Friday.

Eligibility Requirements to Vote

To register to vote in Virginia, you must:

  • Be a United States citizen
  • Be a resident of Virginia
  • Be 18 years old by the next general election
  • Have had your voting rights restored if you have ever been convicted of a felony
  • Have had your capacity restored if you have ever been declared mentally incapacitated in a Circuit Court

Restoration of Rights

Are you a convicted felon and would like your voting rights restored?

The Secretary of the Commonwealth of Virginia has authority to process your request to have your civil rights restored. Please go to the Secretary of the Commonwealth Restoration of Rights page for information on the requirements, process, and application.

You may submit your request directly through the application page of the Secretary of the Commonwealth.

Acceptable Types of Identification

For Registration
If you are registering for the first time by mail, federal law (the Help America Vote Act) requires you to provide identification. To avoid delays, please enclose a copy of one of the following documents that shows your name and address with your application: (1) current and valid photo ID, (2) current utility bill, (3) bank statement, (4) government check, (5) paycheck, or (6) other government document.

For Voting
Virginia law requires every voter voting in-person to show photo identification.

Deceased Voter
