| Car Clinics: |
Sunday, April 13, 27, and May 11, 2008 1:00-4:00pm Car clinics will be held at the Elks Lodge, located on Tidewater Trail,
All clinics are FREE to attend. No need to register. Just show up and bring your questions. Come with or without your car, but you'll get the most out of the clinic by bringing your car. Our race inspectors will be on hand to answer questions and to make sure your car is regulation.
Note: Older cars will have modifications needed to be eligible for the 2008 race. This possibly includes new axles, floorboards, etc. Our inspectors are available at the clinics to see if you need an update. Questions? Contact Us.
Attend a car clinic and you get to pick your inspection/impound appointment time. Those drivers who attend at least one car clinic are invited to select their Inspection date and time on a first-come, first-served basis. All drivers who do not attend a clinic will be assigned a time slot for their Inspection. All drivers will be notified of their time slot in May. |

| Inspections? |
Inspections & Impound Days - Attendance is Mandatory.
Saturday, May 31, 2008 Sunday, June 1, 2008
All cars are inspected to ensure they comply with the All-American Soap Box Derby and the 20087 Rappahannock Regional Soap Box Derby Rules and Regulations. Your derby car will face final inspection on May 31 - June 1, 2008. Once the car passes final inspection, it is securely impounded until race day.
What happens at Inspection & Impound? First we'll give you your official racer's t-shirt, then take a photo of the you (the driver) in the car for the race day program. Then you will remove the shell from your car and have it inspected. Once the car has passed inspection, then you'll replace the shell and we impound it until race day. (We recommend that you bring your car to inspection with the shell secured by just a few screws (so your photo can be taken with the car in tact), remove the screws for inspection, the put the shell on with ALL of its screws before impound.)
We have a lot of racers to process in just two day. All cars must pass inspection and be impounded to be eligible to race. BE ON TIME for your appointment.
After the race, the three winning cars will be inspected again, to ensure that they are in compliance to go on to Akron's national race.
** Please be sure to attend at least one Car Clinic. We want every car to successfully pass inspection and go on to race on June 14th. We are here to answer your questions and give you a hand.
Please note: We expect good sportsmanship during all aspects of the race, including attendance at Car Clinics, Meetings, Inspection/Impound, Lane & Heat and Race Day. |

| New or Returning Car? |
Drivers may purchase a new car kit or race in a previously built car.
You may purchase a new car kit and the build the car from scratch. Purchase the kit from the All-American Soap Box Derby. Their address is www.aasbd.com. The kit will be shipped directly to your house. You are invited to bring the car to a clinic or even call our inspectors to ask questions about the building.
A car that was previously built may also be raced. In keeping with the goals of the derby, we prefer that your driver become familiar with how the car is built. Take the shell off and check out the construction. And check to see if the car needs any updates to comply with the 2008 Rules and Regulations. Some older cars may need new axles, floorboard, etc. You are invited to bring the car to a clinic and have an inspector look it over.
New Changes to Old Cars Akron has made the new cars easier to build; the kits have fewer parts and require fewer tools. The new 2007 floorboards are pre-finished -- tung oil treatment will no longer be required. All of the turnbuckles have been removed from Stock and Super Stock for safety reasons. The washer configurations on Stock and Super Stock cars have now been standardized per class. All cars, new and returning, must be built according to 2007 plans to be eligible for the Rappahannock Regional Soap Box Derby, Free Lance-Star Classic.
Car Updates for 2007 include: 1.) All cars must have a screw in the front of the body where it meets the floorboard. A drywall screw iwth a body washer must be used. 2.) Axles must be replaced that are older than 2000. (Year of axles are stamped on both front and rear axles.) 3.) Washer stacks under axles on Stock and Super Stock cars must be changed to the standardized configuration in the 2007 build plans. 4.) Rear stabilizer bars on Stock cars will be replaced in order to remove the turnbuckles. 5.) Steering cables must be replaced on all cars due to the removal of turnbuckles. All parts will be available for purchase at the clinics. Axles will be $100 for the set. Other updates should cost no more than $25. These updates may be bothersome, however, they make the Derby Cars much safer and more competitive for the drivers. |
