Residential Parking Permits
The Fredericksburg Police Department is updating its policy regarding residential and other parking permits. Beginning July 22, 2008, all residential parking permits will have an expiration date and all city residents and employees of city businesses who require a permit for parking in restricted areas must obtain a new one. Letters are being sent to those affected by this policy change. The Police Department will begin enforcement of the new permit requirement in the College Heights neighborhood on September 2, 2008, and enforcement in other areas of the city will begin on September 15.
Explanation of Parking Permits and Expirations:
- Yellow – For residents of College Heights, including UMW students, who live on streets posted with signs that read: “Residential Permit Parking Only”. Expiration date: July 31, 2010
- Orange – For employees of downtown businesses, including city employees, to allow them to park on streets posted with signs that read: “No Parking 5am – 8am Except Residents” NOTE: Vehicles with orange decals are NOT exempt from two-hour parking restrictions. Expiration Date: July 31, 2009

How to Obtain a New Parking Permit:
- Permits must be obtained from the Records Division at Police Headquarters, 2200 Cowan Blvd. The Records Division is open Monday – Friday, 8:30 am – 4:00 pm.
- Residents must present a photo ID and a copy of the vehicle registration for every vehicle that requires a permit. If the ID and vehicle registration do not display the pertinent city address, the resident must provide proof of residency (ie, copy of lease, utility bill, property bill of sale).
- The parking permits are FREE.
Once obtained, the parking decal must be prominently displayed on the rear bumper of the vehicle in order to avoid the issuance of a parking citation. Display of the parking permit will also allow the vehicle owner to park in the VRE parking lots that are restricted to city residents.
Any questions, please contact the Records Division at (540)372-1165.
