Officer Friendly

Officers interacting with schoolchildrenThe Fredericksburg Police Department provides the Officer Friendly Program to the students at Hugh Mercer Elementary School. At an early stage children are taught that police officers are friendly people who have many duties that include:

  • Helping people cross the street safely.
  • Helping lost children get home safely.
  • Helping people who become sick on the street or who have accidents.
  • Stopping people who are cruel to children and animals.
  • Stopping people who drive too fast.
  • Stopping arguments and fights.
  • Watching out for all things that may hurt people.
  • Making sure the doors of closed stores are locked late at night.
  • Telling people which way to go or where to stand so that they will not hurt each other when large crowds gather.
  • Telling people how to get to different places in the city.
  • Capturing people who have broken the law.
  • Teaching boys and girls about safety.
  • Preventing people from destroying the property of others.
  • Working to prevent drug abuse.
