Fire Station #1 was constructed in 1971 and completed and occupied in 1972.  It was the only fire station in Fredericksburg until Station #2 was occupied in 1988.  It replaced an older brick building that had served as the city’s fire station for many years.  Station #1 was also considered “Fire Headquarters” because it also contained all the administrative offices of the department including the Office of the Fire Chief until 2003.  It like all city fire stations is staffed 24 hours a day and consists of 1 – Engine crew, 1 – Tower crew, the Shift Commander with 1 – Career Medic crew staffed from 0530-1800 Monday – Friday.

Station #1’s response district includes the entire downtown area which features many buildings built during the late 1700s and early 1800s or directly after the Civil War.  It also includes the main government offices.  The University of Mary Washington [UMW] all its buildings and grounds are also in the district as well as a hospital, school, a bulk oil and propane gas storage facility and the main line for CSX railroad.  These hazards require the personnel assigned to this station to be well versed in combating a multitude of emergencies that can occur in and around these facilities.
